Ellen Treffly Coyne

  • Ellen Treffly Coyne was arrested on December 8, 2007 after she and her older two children walked 10 yards away from her car and her two-year-old sleeping daughter in order to put money in a Salvation Army kettle. The kettle was located 10 yards away from the car, and Mrs. Coyne maintains she had the car in view the entire time she was gone. After she deposited the money she headed back to her car where she was blocked by a community service officer who handcuffed her and took custody of the two year old. She called her husband and he advised her to say nothing else. The older two children were ignored by the police, and their father found them unattended on a bench at Wal-Mart when he arrived. Coyne was charged with misdemeanor child endangerment and obstruction of justice. Illinois state law states that a child left unattended in a car for 10 minutes or more can be charged with misdemeanor child endangerment.
