Comedian Ellen DeGeneres was originally slated to co-host the 2008 Idol Gives Back charity special on April 9, 2008. In early April, reports began circulating that DeGeneres had dropped out of the show because of a production scheduling conflict on her own show.
American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe later confirmed DeGeneres would be unable to appear, adding that Ryan Seacrest would be the lone host.
