Before she began studying at Yale, Turnbull calculated that she would pay $14,000 for two years of rent in New Haven, Connecticut. She took that $14,000 and began purchasing and collecting materials for a sustainable and environmentally friendly home. The first purchase was a 8-foot by 18-foot flatbed trailer, on which the house was built.FOX News: Student Builds Tiny House With Big Sustainability

Turnbull had overwhelming support from local groups and residents, collecting donations including the floor, roof, insulation, toilet, paint, counter top and lighting. She also received help from volunteer builders, providing them with barbecue dinners each Saturday in June, July and August of 2008. The house was completed in October of 2008.Official Blog: Turnbull Tiny House
