In 2002, at the age of 14, Utah's Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped and held for nine months. She was rescued on March 12, 2003, only 18 miles from her home.
Smart's accused abductors are Brian David Mitchell, a middle-aged man with a rare delusional condition, and his wife, Wanda Barzee. Mitchell's competency hearing is set for November 30, 2009. Path to Recovery Following Abduction
A man calling himself "Emmanuel" had done some handy-man work for the Smarts. A sketch from the family's memory was done and shared on America's Most Wanted and Larry King Live of Elizabeth Smart's abductor. Family members recognized the man in the sketch and contacted authorities with Emmanuel's real name, which turned out to be her abductor, Brian David Mitchell.-
