Election 2008
Senator Elizabeth Dole was in a heated battle with Democratic State Senator Kay Hagan to win a second term in office. In October 2008, she began running ads in North Carolina accusing Hagan of taking funds from the "Godless Americans" political action committee. Hagan, who called the ad "fabricated" and "pathetic," filed a defamation lawsuit against Dole and eventually won the election.TIME: Races to Watch: Dole's Hail-Mary Ad in North Carolina (November 3, 2008) -
