Elián González, the child who was forcibly returned to Cuba by the United States in 2000, joined Cuba's Young Communist Union in June, 2008.
The Gonzalez Story
Gonzalez's return to Cuba created a political firestorm in the months leading up to the 2000 Presidential election. Gonzalez's mother, in her attempt to flee Cuba by boat with other exiles, died en route, and Elian was taken in by relatives in Florida. However, Elian's father remained in Cuba and wanted his child returned. Eventually, United States courts award custody to the father, and Gonzalez was taken, by gunpoint, from the Miami home where he was staying. He returned soon after to Cuba with his father.
