Career Overview
Elf Power started as a recording project by couple Andrew Rieger and Laura Carter while the two were living in Athens, Georgia. They turned some four-track cassette recordings into the band's first album, the self-released Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs, in 1995.Rieger and Carter moved to New York City for a time before returning to Athens and recording a follow-up, When the Red King Comes in 1997. The album was released by the Elephant 6 label and features musicians from a variety of Elephant 6 bands, including Jeff Mangum from Olivia Tremor Control and Kevin Barnes from Of Montreal.
More albums followed: A Dream in Sound was produced by Dave Fridmann, known for his work with The Flaming Lips, and was followed almost immediately by The Winter Is Coming. The band released 2 albums in 2002: Creatures and Nothing's Going to Happen, a cover album featuring songs by Gary Numan, The Misfits and others. The band signed to the Rykodisc label in 2006 and released their eighth album, Back to the Web. This year will see the release of their ninth record, In a Cave.
