Elena Desserich passed away from cancer in 2007 at the age of six, but only after she stashed notes all over her house for her parents and sister to find after her death. According to her father, Keith Desserich, after Elena's death, they started finding notes from her everywhere, including hidden between books and CDs.http://www.wlwt.com/family/21429609/detail.html The Desserich family decided to turn Elena's notes, along with a journal they kept during their daughter's illness, into a book called Notes Left Behind, which hit bookstores in October 2009. All proceeds from the book will go to the family's cancer foundation, The Cure Starts Now.

Diagnosed with pediatric brain cancer when she was only five, Elena Desserich was given only 135 days to live. During those 135 days, she lost her ability to communicate verbally, so instead she left notes for her family scattered throughout the house.Her parents, Keith and Brooke Desserich began finding the notes after her death, and eventually decided to turn them into a book, with all proceeds going to their cancer foundation.
