    At his 18th birthday party, El-P met DJ Mr. Len, with whom he founded the hip-hop group Company Flow in 1992. The band recorded on Rawkus Records from 1993 to 2001 and were highly influential to the alternative hip-hop scene.

    When Company Flow left Rawkus Records in 1999, El-P decided to start Definitive Jux, gaining some level of notoriety for the releases The Cold Vein from Cannibal Ox and Labor Days by Aesop Rock.

    After the dissolution of Company Flow in 2001, El-P released his first solo effort, Fantastic Damage. His second album, I'll Sleep When You're Dead, followed in 2007.
