Regional Spanish broadcaster EITB was the target of a car bomb in Bilbao, Spain, on December 31, 2008. Despite the attack, the broadcaster remained on the air. The explosion took place at the station's headquarters. The local fire station coordinated an evacuation with the local police following a warning by telephone about an hour before the blast. Background
The ETA is a terrorist group that has been fighting for the independence of Spain's Basque region for four decades. During this time hundreds have been killed by the group. A ceasefire that had been established was called off in after two men from Ecuador were killed by the ETA.
