Egg McMuffin

  • The Egg McMuffin was developed in 1971 by Herb Peterson for the McDonald's fast food chain. It is now their staple sandwich on their breakfast menu.
  • Mornings with Mac

A traditional Egg McMuffin consists of an egg, a slice of American cheese, and a slice of Canadian Bacon, all served on a toasted English Muffin. It can now also be ordered with sausage or bacon. The sandwich first debuted to the public at a McDonald's restaurant in Santa Barbara, CA that Peterson co-owned along with his son David. McDonald's restaurants only served lunch and dinner at the time, and Peterson made the executive decision to debut the breakfast sandwich without the permission of the McDonald's executives. When McDonald's brass found out about Peterson's secret sandwich they considered penalizing the breakfast pioneer. However, the overwhelming success of the product was so encouraging, that they decided to make breakfast a fixture on the McDonald's menu.
