Edward Nathaniel Bell's case made headlines when Virginia Governor Tim Kaine publicly stated that while he personally opposed capital punishment on religious grounds, he would not seek to stop Bell's execution. Sgt. Ricky Timbrook's widow, Kelly Timbrook, appeared in a campaign ad for Kaine's opponent in the 2005 gubernatorial election.
