  • Edith Shain was a nurse working at Doctors Hospital in New York City on August 15, 1945—the day Japan surrendered during World War II. Shain says she rushed into the streets of Times Square to join in the impromptu celebration that followed the news. Shain claims she is the nurse being passionately embraced by a sailor in a photo shot by famed photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt on that day. Shain was expected to serve as grand marshal in New York City's Veterans Day parade on November 11, 2008.Newsday: Nurse in Times Square war photo meets Navy again New York Daily News: Nurse in iconic V-J Day Times Square photo still kissing

"I went from Doctors Hospital to Times Square that day because the war was over, and where else does a New Yorker go? And this guy grabbed me and we kissed, and then I turned one way and he turned the other. There was no way to know who he was, but I didn't mind because he was someone who had fought for me."Newsday: Nurse in Times Square war photo meets Navy again

"As for the picture, it says so many things _ hope, love, peace and tomorrow. The end of the war was a wonderful experience, and that photo represents all those feelings."Newsday: Nurse in Times Square war photo meets Navy again
