Edgar Rice Burroughs was an American author and the creator of the Tarzan series of books and comics. Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago, IL on September 1, 1875 to civil war veteran Maj. Edgar Rice Burroughs began his writing career with the 1911 publication in All-Story Magazine of Dejah Thoris, Martian Princess, later titled A Princess of Mars, under the pseudonym Normal Bean. http://www.edgarriceburroughs.ca/bio/ His third novel, Tarzan of the Apes appeared in the magazine in 1912, was published in book form in 1913, and would later prove to be his greatest success. The first movie based on Tarzan was made in 1918, starring Elmo Lincoln. http://www.edgarriceburroughs.ca/bio/ Overall, Burroughs wrote 26 Tarzan books.
