In March of 2009, the University of Virginia featured a 1842 letter from Poe to his publishers apologizing for his alcohol consumption and subsequent bad behavior in an exhibition. In addition to literature, Poe was active in the field of cryptography, the study and practice of hiding information within codes. At his request, readers sent cryptograms to Poe and he would publish the solutions. In all, Poe published more than 100 solutions.The Edgar Allan Poe Cryptographic Challenge: Official Site Two puzzles sent in by a Mr. W. B. Tyler were left unsolved until nearly 150 years later.
