The Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador has showed signs of volcanic activity since 1999. The volcano went into a high level of activity in January 2008, and has continued intermittently. On July 21, 2008, Tungurahua began venting ash and gas. The activity has raised fears of a repeat of the deadly September 2006 eruption which killed several people and left thousands homeless.Global Volcanism:Tungurahua eruptive historyReuters: Ecuador volcano spews ash, 700 evacuated January 10, 2008
Historical Eruptions
Tungurahua's recent volcanic activity began in 1999. Before that period, the volcano had been dormant since 1925. Geological and radiocarbon dating have traced eruptions back at least 3,000 years, and historical documents record eruptions since the 17th century.Global Volcanism:Tungurahua eruptive history
