Ecards are digital versions of postcards or greeting cards sent to recipients through e-mail or websites rather than in person or through standard mail. They are generally used for special occasions, but have a wide range of uses including general thank yous, to express sympathy, or just to say hello.
Ecards, just like traditional greeting cards, can be serious, loving or humorous. Many Ecard sites specialize in a certain ECard theme. For example, the website SomeEcards.com produces very tongue-in-cheek and occasionally sarcastic Ecards that, in addition to being sent to someone special, can also be embedded on blogs or social media sites like Facebook for general amusement.
Types of Ecards
There are several varieties of Ecards. They include:
- Flat Ecards, or Postcards—these Ecards are simple HTML files, without animation; they can have personalized text
- Animated Ecards—these Ecards use Flash to create animation within the ECard; these are currently the most commonly sent type of Ecards
- Video Ecards—these cards use personalized video along with personalized text
- Mobile Ecards—these are Ecards that can be sent to mobile phones via MMS technology
- Personalized web based Ecards—users take advantage of online multimedia to customize the Ecard they want to send, often with the option to change the background, add or delete images, change text placement, etc.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-card
Spammer Warning
Because Ecards are sent via email, some Ecard recipients have reported receiving a multitude of spam after receiving or sending an Ecard. Ecards have also been used to spread viruses across the Internet. If you are sending an Ecard, make sure the site you use promises that they will not release your information or the information of your recipient to 3rd parties.
