    In 1895, the university was founded as Eastern Illinois State Normal School by the Illinois General Assembly.   • The Campus

    The university campus is located in the county seat of Coles County on 320 acres and consists of 72 buildings. It also owns wooded tracts near Charleston which are used for nature study and life science research.
