The East Tennessee State Buccaneers men's basketball team competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference. They are a school of just over 12,000 from Johnson City, Tennessee, and are coached by Murry Bartow. They completed a 20-14 2009-2010 regular season record overall with a 13-7 record in conference play. They defeated Mercer in the 2010 Atlantic Sun Tournament final by a score of 72-66 to advance into the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. For all of their success in the conference tournament, the Buccaneers received an expected #16 seed and a date with none other than the University of Kentucky. East Tennessee State fell to the Wildcats 100-71 in an East Regional opener on March 18, 2010, at New Orleans Arena. The Wildcats (32-2) entered the game as the nation’s second ranked team and a prohibitive favorite led by freshman studs John Wall and center DeMarcus Cousins.
Playing a top seed was nothing new to this crew. The 2008-2009 team also drew a berth with a #1 seed, the University of Pittsburgh, and played the Panthers extremely tough. East Tennessee State trailed late in the game by only two points, 59-57, before losing by just ten points.
The 2009-2010 bunch played a relatively tough non-conference schedule, going head-to-head against tournament teams such as Louisville, Tennessee, and Murray State. East Tennessee State is led in scoring by forward Tommy Hubbard (14.1 points per game), Micah Williams (12.5 points per game), and Justin Tubbs (12 points per game). Hubbard also leads the team in rebounds at nearly ten a game. He is the team leader and the voice of the team. The team will also rely on their battle-tested coach, Murry Bartow. If his last name sounds familiar to college basketball fans, it should. Murry Bartow is the son of Gene Bartow, a famous Division I coach with UAB. http://www.etsubucs.com/sports/mbball/coach/bio.asp?COACH_ID=782
