Earth Day is a global celebration held annually on April 22. The observance was conceived by former Senator Gaylord Nelson. Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, many people now celebrate earth week, which begins on April 16.

Claims of commercialization of the environmental movement have lead critics to state that Earth Day has become the exception that proves the rule.
