Earl Averill was a Major League Baseball player from 1929 to 1941. Averil spent most of his career with the Cleveland Indians in which he is still the all-time leader in total bases, runs batted in, runs, and triples. Averill's position was center field. During the All Star Game of 1937, Averill had a famous line drive hit that broke the toe of Dizzy Dean. In 1941, Averill retired as a Boston Brave now known as the Atlanta Braves. Come 1975 Averill was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame shortly after telling his family not to accept the honor if they inducted him after his death. Eight years later in 1983 Averill passed away. His son Earl Averill Jr followed his footsteps and played Major League Baseball from 1956-1963.
