The Dyson Vacuum is a vacuum cleaner that uses filter-free high-powered suction while collecting both small and big particles of dust and debris.
The Dual Cyclone bagless vacuum cleaner technology used in Dyson vacuums was an invention by James Dyson. Dyson invented the cyclone dirt seperation technique out of frustration with regular vacuum cleaners, who lost their performance after use by dust cluttering the bag. Dyson came up with his cyclone dust separation technique in the late 1970's, but it took him five more years of prototyping and development before being able to release his first commercial vacuum cleaner, the 'G-Force' vacuum in 1983. Jason got the patent for his invention in 1986. http://www.google.com/patents?id=PFk7AAAAEBAJ&printsec=abstract&zoom=4&source=gbs_overview_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q=&f=false
Initially, Jason's invention wasn't well received, and he was unable to find a manufacturer or reseller for his product, mainly out of fear of disrupting the cleaner-bag market. Jason decided to create his own manufacturing company in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. After producing his first vacuum cleaners, Dyson quickly became the biggest vacuum cleaner seller in his home market, the United Kingdom. In 2005, Dyson was announced to be the the biggest seller in the United States by value. Recent developments include additional dust filters for animal hair removal, additional suction by adding an extra smaller diameter cyclone (called 'root cyclone'), and the Dyson Ball, a rollign ball, allowing for higher manouverability. http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/10/6BFC.html
Dyson vacuum cleaners are priced relatively high compared to their competition, but as they don't need bags or filters to remain operational, there are no additional costs.
Dyson's vacuum cleaners are designed using bright colors, and see-though compartments. In an interview with website Core77, Dyson explained the use of the clear dust compartment:
"I found it really fascinating that you could see exactly what was happening; you could actually see the nature and texture and type of dirt you've picked up."http://www.core77.com/reactor/dyson_interview.asp
Currently, over 1,200 people are employed at Dyson, including 300 engineers and scientists. Next to vacuum cleaners, Dyson also produced the now discontinued washing machine called 'ContraRotator' and the hand dryer named 'Dyson Airblade', which can regularly be seen in public bathrooms.http://www.core77.com/reactor/dyson_interview.asp A new Dyson Fan was released in 2009 that features a bladeless design and is based on jet engine technology.http://www.dyson.com/fans/default.asphttp://techedgegroup.blogspot.com/2009/10/dyson-fan-look-ma-no-blades.html
How It Works
A Dyson vacuum works by using a process called cyclonic separation which is a method of spinning air rapidly inside a cone-shaped container and then separating and collecting dust and dirt particles into a bin instead of a filter or bag like conventional vacuum cleaners.
