Dwight D. Eisenhower, born on October 18, 1890, was the 34th U.S. president. He served in office from January 20, 1953, until January 20, 1961, winning his second election by a significant margin. During his time in office his primary focus was on the Cold War, which had begun while Harry Truman was still in office.
Before serving as President, Eisenhower rose to the level of General of the Army in recognition of his efforts in both World Wars. He later became President of Columbia University and then Supreme Commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Unlike most Presidents, he did not seek political office before becoming the President of the United States of America.
Eisenhower Memorial
The Eisenhower Memorial is a monument planned to be completed by 2015. It will be built n the National Mall overlooking the Capitol Building. Architect Frank Gehry was chosen to design the memorial, which will be three 65-foot tall tapestries suspended by etched limestone columns. A grove of oaks within the tapestries will provide a park-like feel to the monument, unlike most other monuments on the mall.

Interstate Highway System
While in office, Eisenhower signed a bill in 1956 that permitted the Interstate Highway System to be implemented. The belief was that it was vitally important to the American public's security during the Cold War. They were initially designed for mass evacuation of people and for the military to have easier access into areas they needed to move into.
Eisenhower on the Military-Industrial Complex
Although republican, Eisenhower's exit speech warning of the dangers of the military-industrial complex is far closer to the current democratic ideal: "We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex."
