The DuPont Corporation was started by Eleuthère Irénée du Pont in 1802. It is the second largest chemical company in the world. On December 6, 2008, the company announced that it would cut about 2,500 jobs in response to a plunging U.S. economy. Less than a week later, chief rival Dow Chemical announced that it would make 5,000 layoffs.
