Dungeons and Dragons is a popular tabletop game around the world and a leading influence in the fantasy role-playing game (RPG) genre.
The game started as a spin off of table top war gaming replacing player lead armies with a player leading a single character, this allowed for greater depth of ability for the single unit as well as a framework for creating story based adventures.
Basic Play in the D&D Universe
Each player creates a character with his or her own special powers and talents. One player is a Dungeon Master (DM) who creates the setting of the game and acts as the referee and the storyteller. The characters form a group that must embark on an adventure that forces them to fight battles and solve problems and gain experience and treasures. One game adventure is often played over several sessions and different adventures can be linked together and called a campaign.
