Lloyd Christmas (Carey) is a limo driver who becomes infatuated with his passenger, Mary Swanson (Holly), as he drives her to the airport. After failing to return a briefcase left behind by Mary, Lloyd convinces his friend and roommate Harry Dunne (Daniels) to Travel to Aspen and return the briefcase to Mary. Both Harry and Lloyd are unaware that the breifcase contains a large sum of cash that Mary was using as ransom money for her kidnapped husband.

On their way to Aspen, Harry and Lloyd have several misadventures, inadvertently kill one of the kidnappers, and wind up separating when Lloyd takes a wrong turn and drives them to Nebraska instead of Colorado. After he trades the van for a small scooter Lloyd finds Harry hitchhiking home and "totaly redeems" himself.

The two land in Aspen and after spending a cold night in a park they wind up in a fight, in the process knocking open the briefcase revealing the money inside. Deciding to "spend it responsibly" and keep track of all expenditures with "I.O.U's", Harry and Lloyd wind up purchasing Ferraris, make-overs, expensive suits and other extravagances. Lloyd tries to use the money to woo Mary who instead falls for Harry, whose stupidity she mistakes for intentional humor.

Eventually the kidnappers catch up to Harry and Lloyd, who hold the three hostage in a hotel room at gunpoint. When Lloyd reveals all the money is gone, the kidnapper almost kills them before the FBI storm the room. Mary is reunited with her husband, much to Lloyd's dismay. With no money, the two begin to walk home.
