The term Druid is a term that was used to label and define a class of Celtic wisdom seekers by the Romans. There is little actually known about the Druids, except that they were of major concern to the Romans who did write about them.http://www.whatisdruidry.org/nine.html
There is much disinformation and assumptions that are made about the Druid when one looks for information on them. Fantasization as well as assumptions based upon personal ideas as opposed to facts.
Druids were the wise of the various Celtic communities and cultures; they were teachers, healers, poets, musicians , knower's and holders of knowledge and wisdom outside of the general populace.http://www.skepdic.com/druids.html

A Druid was not a priest of any religion, and Druidism the practices and held knowledge of the Druid was not a religion of the Celt's. See Druidism for more information on Druidism. This is not to say that a Druid could not have a belief system, or believe in a religion, but the practices of a Druid were not a religion of the Druids.

Modern day Druids
Due to the fact that the history of the Druid has been all but lost for the most part, the modern day Druids, and it is important to note the plurality of the term, is based on a composit of history, myth and stories. The result is that there are many types of Druids today.http://druidry.org/obod/druid-path/druidhistory.html
Some of the types of Druids include:
- Religious Druids - a whole new dogma is formed more so around the Celtic based spirituality and religions than on Druidism.
- Ritualistic Druids - Druids who form a group of like minded people to perform ritualistic practices.
- Solitary Druids - The Solitary Druid is probably the most diverse of modern day Druids as they can take on many expressions of Druidry. For the most part similar to Ritualistic Druids many practice rituals in a solitary manner. There are some Druids who look at the essence of the Druid as the wisdom seeker not the ritualistic player, and encompass that element into their life.
- Consciousness Druid - this is a new concept from The Island Druid and seeks to focus the Druid as the ideal of the seeker of wisdom and consciousness both inner and outer to ones being. Of the few historical records on Druids that exist, one of the main characteristics of the Druid was that of the Wise-man, the Wisdom holder, seeker, giver. Through out history it is the wise who held the secrets to the path of Consciousness and as such it would have been the Druids who taught and held the knowledge of the path of Consciousness.
