Dreamgirls is a film adaptation of a Broadway musical of the same name about the history of R&B music in America as seen through the eyes of a group of aspiring singers and performers. Directed by Bill Condon (who also adapted it to the screen) the movie was a critical smash and went on to earn eight Academy Award nominations. Jennifer Hudson's performance as Effie White (and her performance of the song And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going) was particularly acclaimed and earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Three young friends from Detroit form an R&B act known as The Dreamettes with a dream of being the back up group for James "Thunder" Early (played by Eddie Murphy). The three friends, Effie White (Jennifer Hudson), Deena Jones (Beyoncé Knowles), and Lorrell Robinson (Anika Noni Rose) ultimately get the backup singer roll and perform their first professional show at the famed Apollo Theatre in New York City. The storyline sees the group facing the change over of lead singer from Effie to Deena and Effie ultimately being out of a job. On March 2, 2010, a live performance of the Dreamgirls began at the Orange County Ahmanson Theatre, in Los Angeles, CA. Syesha Mercado, an "American Idol" runner-up, plays Deena Jones, the character played by Beyonce in the movie.
