Dreamgirls is a film adaptation of a Broadway musical of the same name about the history of R&B music in America as seen through the eyes of a group of aspiring singers and performers. Directed by Bill Condon (who also adapted it to the screen) the movie was a critical smash and went on to earn eight Academy Award nominations. Jennifer Hudson's performance as Effie White (and her performance of the song "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going") was particularly acclaimed and earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
