The "Thank Me Later"" Album is the debut album for Aubrey Graham, a.k.a. Drake. The 2010 album was the most anticipated hip-hop album of the year, mainly because of Drake's rise in popularity through collaborations with popular artists, like Lil' Wayne and Jay-Z. "Thank Me Later"'s hip-hop sound is given a lift with collaborations from Jay-Z, Lil' Wayne, Alicia Keys, Young Jeezy, T.I., and other artists.http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1639694/20100520/drake.jhtml
The hour-long album is produced and licensed by Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records, and Universal Motown. Many hip-hop and rap stars helped produce the tracks, such as 40, Boi-1da, Kayne West, Timberland, and other producers. Executive Producers were Lil' Wayne, Cortez Bryant, Gee Robinson, Slim Williams, and Birdman. It was released on June 15th, 2010. http://www.prefixmag.com/reviews/drake/thank-me-later/30715/
So far, predictions put Thank Me Later to selling between 425k to 475k albums by the debut week's end; but this would put the album below expectations. Executive Producer Lil' Wayne predicted one million copies sold, while rapper The Game predicted 650,000 albums sold.http://headlineplanet.com/home/2010/06/16/drakes-thank-me-later-sales-tracking-below-hopes/ http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:jiftxz8dldfe~T2
Performer Background
Thank Me Later is the debut album for Drake, whose fame has built over the last year from his minor hit "Replacement Girl" and multiple collaborations in other albums, such as Jay-Z's [The Blueprint 3]].http://www.prefixmag.com/reviews/drake/thank-me-later/30715/ Drake is more famously known for his long-tenured stint as Jimmy Brooks, a handicapped jock from the TeenNick original series, "Degrassi".
Drake made it into the music scene after he released his third mixtape, "So Far Gone", which was so popular, it was released later as an EP. Afterwards, Drake signed with Young Money Entertainment and toured with Lil' Wayne on America's Most Wanted Tour.http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1614953/20090629/lil_wayne.jhtml
Album Reviews
- Prefix Mag: "For all its faults, Thank Me Later is at least unique to Drake’s vision, something you can’t say about many hip-hop albums any more." http://www.prefixmag.com/reviews/drake/thank-me-later/30715
- Chicago Tribune: "So Drake isn’t the hip-hop savior he was hyped to be. Instead, as he drifts through what should have been his boisterous coming-out party, he comes off as muted and rueful, missing the days when he was 19 and it was just about him and his girlfriend in a college dorm room."http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/turn_it_up/2010/06/album-review-drake-thank-me-later.html
- Entertainment Weekly: "Fame's downside is a frequent topic for Drake, the Degrassi actor–turned–hip-hop heartthrob, who spends half of his debut Thank Me Later rapping about the anxieties and disappointments that have come with his success." http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20392152,00.html
- Rolling Stone: "Drake is in total command of a style that would have been hard to imagine dominating hip-hop a few years ago: He's subtle and rueful rather than loud and lively; emotionally transparent rather than thuggy." http://www.rollingstone.com/music/reviews/album/17385/117162
