The Dragunov rifle, also called the SVD Sniper, is a one of the first semi-automatic sniper rifles produced. It was developed in the late-1950s and early-1960s by the Soviet weapons designer Evgeniy Dragunov, and produced starting in 1964. The weapon has since been licensed for production in Iraq and China, and is used in over a dozen countries.
Trivia
The Dragunov is similar to the Kalashnikov rifle, though not the paramilitary icon the Kalashnikov has become. One of its only references in popular culture is in the Marvel Comics series The Punisher, which features a vigilante character who names himself after the firearm.
