Drag racing is a sport in which two cars or motorcycles line up side-by-side and race down a straight strip as fast as they can go. The winner is the first vehicle to cross the finish line.
A typical drag racing event consists of several classes of cars racing head-to-head in single elimination tournaments.
Bracket racing is becoming more and more popular as high end cars evolve and not everyone can afford thousands of dollars to enhance their car. In bracket racing, you literally guess the time that your car is going to run the race in, and try not to go faster than that (breakout). The person in the other lane does the same with thier car. Who ever comes the closest to the guessed time - Estimated time or ET - without going over wins the race. The reaction time off the starting light is included and can be a tie breaker if both drivers run their ET. For example, if one car was dialed at a 7.00 and ran a 7.00, the other car was dialed at a 8.80 and ran an 8.80, then the reaction time would be the tie breaker. Whoever left quickest would win. This happens frequently.
Braket racing allows a much wider variety of cars to be able to compete against each other in contrast to heads up racing.
Starting the Race
Professional drag races are started electronically with a "Christmas Tree," a set of vertically-arranged yellow and green lights. Informal races are started by a variety of means including flag-waving and arm-dropping.
