Dr. Strangelove

  • Dr. Strangelove is a 1964 film directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Peter Sellers, who plays three of the main roles. It is a black comedy satirizing the Cold War, and it's full title is Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

  • Plot Synopsis

A paranoid US general, Jack D Ripper, commanding a wing of nuclear-armed B52 bombers, launches an unauthorized attack on the Soviet Union. Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, a British RAF officer serving under Ripper, realizes that something is wrong and attempts to call off the attack.

As those in Washington learn what is happening, Air Force General Buck Turgidson argues that President Merkin Muffley's best course in the circumstances is to launch a full-scale attack on the Soviets before they can retaliate. Muffley, however, calls Soviet Premier Dmitri Kissoff in an effort to prevent all out war.

Kissoff reveals that the Soviets have recently created a Doomsday Device which will automatically respond to any nuclear strike and destroy all life on Earth. Frantic efforts to stop the B52 attack follow

"The collapse of the Cold War may have left Kubrick's satire on mutually assured destruction less relevant than it was, but it still features Peter Sellers' finest three performances as well as proving that the supposedly humourless Kubrick was up for a laugh."—Dorian Lynskey, Empire Onlinehttp://www.empireonline.com/reviews/review.asp?DVDID=10459

"Perhaps Kubrick's most perfectly realised film, simply because his cynical vision of the progress of technology and human stupidity is wedded with comedy."—Time Out Film Guidehttp://www.timeout.com/film/reviews/65590/dr_strangelove-or_how_i_learned_to_stop_worrying_and_love_the_bomb.html
