Dr. Allan Friedman is a neurologist at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.
Friedman is performing brain surgery on Edward Kennedy on June 2, 2008 to remove his malignant brain tumor. The surgery is expected to last six hours. After the surgery, Kennedy will remain in the hospital for one week.
The Surgery
Friedman will cut an incision in Kennedy's head to expose his skull. A drill will be used to make a small hole in the skull, and a drill bit will be inserted. A high powered microscope will be used to cut the brain to find the cancer.
Once the cancer is located, Friedman can use a scissor like scalpel to remove it.
