After the U.S. House of Representatives rejected the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 on September 29, 2008, the Dow dropped over 777.68 points at the end of the day of trading, breaking the previous record set in 2001. A week later, on October 6, 2008, the Dow broke the intraday record point loss when it briefly was down 800 points over an hour before the close.
