Doug Mirabelli

  • Doug Mirabelli is the number two catcher for the Boston Red Sox. He was originally obtained by the Red Sox for his unique ability to steadily catch knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. But he has proved himself to be an excellent back up to team captain Jason Varitek and an valuable veteran presence in the Red Sox locker room as part of two World Series titles.
  • Early Life

    Douglas Anthony Mirabelli was born in Kingman, Arizona on October 18, 1970. He attended Valley High School in Las Vegas. He would later move on to attend Wichita State University where he would be a part of the 1989 College World Series title team.
  • Pro Career

    Mirabelli would be originally drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 6th Round of the 1989 Baseball draft. He would decide tot attend college and would drafted again by the San Francisco Giants with the 131st pick overall in the 1992 Major League Baseball Draft. Mirabelli would make his Major League Debut on August 27, 1996 for the Giants. In 2001, Mirabelli would be obtained by the Texas Rangers, that same year he would be traded to the Boston Red Sox for Justin Duchscherer. He would re-sign with the Red Sox in 2004 and help the Sox win the World Series as the primary catcher for knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. In 2005, he would be traded to the San Diego Padres. He would be released by the Padres on October 31, 2006 and would sign again with the Boston Red Sox, where he is the primary back-up to team captain Jason Varitek. He would serve in that capacity as the Red Sox would win the 2007 World Series.
