On November 3, 2009, he lost his election bid as the Conservative Party nominee to the Congressional seat for the 23rd District of New York. He was defeated by Democratic Party candidate, Bill Owens.

Biography
Doug Hoffman was born and raised in Saranac Lake, New York. He graduated with a B.S. degree in accounting from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 1973. He earned and M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut in 1976 and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1977.http://www.doughoffmanforcongress.com/aboutus.htmlHoffman was the controller for the Lake Placid Organizing Committee established for the 1980 Winter Olympics. Currently he is a managing partner at the accounting firm of Dragon Benware Crowley & Co, which he joined in January of 2007. On August 7, 2009, Doug Hoffman was nominated by the Conservative Party of New York to be their candidate for the special election for the 23rd Congressional District of New York.

Legislation
Prior to his bid for the Congressional seat of the 23rd District of New York, Doug Hoffman had never sought, nor had he held, any public office. His political platform during the congressional campaign, as expressed in his official campaign website and public speeches, revolved around the key issues of: opposition to legalization of gay marriage, support for pro Second Amendment related legislation, and opposition to cap and trade.
