In this video, Mahalo math expert Allison Moffett shows you how to do double-digit subtraction.
Step 1
When subtracting double-digit numbers, make sure that you start by aligning your numbers vertically. The ones digits should all line up, as should the tens, hundreds, etc.
Step 2
Subtract the ones digit on the bottom line from the ones digit on the top line (7-9). If the bottom digit is larger, you must borrow. For this, you will be taking 10 away from the tens digit and adding it to the ones digit. This leaves you with 6 in the tens column and 17 in the ones column, and 17 minus nine is eight.
Step 3
Subtract the tens digit on the bottom from the tens digit on the top line and write it below the difference line.
Step 4
Repeat with each subsequent column right to left (hundreds, thousands, etc). In this case, you are left with 48.
