  • Doris Roberts is an American actress. She was born on November 4, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri. Roberts was raised by her mother, Ann Meltzer, in The Bronx, New York. Her father, Larry Meltzer, left when Roberts was young. Roberts married Michael Cannata. They had a son together named, Michael Cannata, Jr. Roberts and Cannata divorced in 1962. She got remarried in 1963 to writer William Goyen. Goyen died on August 30, 1983 from leukemia. Roberts was the chairwoman for the organization "Children with AIDS Foundation." She has also worked with an organization called "Puppies Behind Bars." This organization works with inmates to help train guide dogs for physically disabled and elderly people.
  • Acting Career

    In 1952, Roberts began her acting career in the television show Studio One. She made her film debut with Something Wild in 1961. In 1970, she played in the film The Honeymoon Killers. From there, she went on to play in Such Good Friends, Little Murders, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Ruby and Oswald and The Rose. Roberts became famous for her role in the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond as Marie Barone which aired from 1996 to 2005. She won four Grammy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress for the show. Since then, she has played in St. Elsewhere, Perfect Strangers, Lizzie McGuire and Grandma's Boy.
