Doom is a first-person shooter video game series that was first released in 1993 by iD Software. Although it was not the first game to feature the first-person shooter mechanic, Doom was notorious in the early 90s for its revolutionary 3D graphics, action-packed violence, and networked multiplayer gaming capabilities. And although these features gained it some negative press, it was still a huge commercial success and is consequently considered one of the most important video game franchises of all time. So far there have been three games in the series, each with a series of expansion packs. The series was also adapted into a movie in 2005.
