Donkey Kong was originally an arcade game in the 80s, introducing "Mario" and the "Princess" for the first time. It has been theorized that creator Shigeru Miyamoto chose the name Donkey Kong for two reasons: because the Japanese/English dictionary he was using defined "donkey" as stubborn, or silly, and "Kong" was used to reference the ape from King Kong.
