Guide Note:
Donatello was an Italian artist from the early Renaissance era. His sculptures were valued for their ability to capture realistic facial emotions. -
Brief Background
Donatello was born in Florence, Italy. His father was a member of the wool comber's guild. Donatello earned his living during his younger years by working in a goldsmith's shop. This is also where he received his first training as an artist. He soon began to get more paid work as artist and was eventually commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici who was one of the most prominent art patrons of the period. Medici asked Donatello to create his David, which is now one of his most well known pieces of sculpture.
Donatello briefly left Florence for Rome but soon returned and continued to produce artwork until his death in 1466.
