Washington graduated at Franklin Central High School where he played as a wide receiver and was one of the top defensive backs in Indiana. He attended The Ohio State University and played for three seasons as a cornerback before he declared to forego his senior season to enter the 2009 NFL Draft. As a Redshirt in 2005, he played on the scout team but did not see any game action. He was named the team's most outstanding first-year defensive player.
