Don Gibson is a country singer/songwriter. He first and biggest hit was "Oh Lonesome Me" in 1957. Gibson was admitted to the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 1973 and Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.

Donald Eugene Gibson had done it all. He worked in a textile mill, delivered baby diapers, washed dishes, fixed jukeboxes, and drove a delivery truck. Not surprisingly, none of these trades were really what Don had in mind for himself as far as a career path. He wanted to play country music. At twenty years old, his band Sons of the Soil got a regular gig on a local radio station in Shelby, North Carolina. After some exposure on the airwaves, he played for executives at Mercury Records, where his song "Why Am I So Lonely" was first recorded. After that and three other songs were recorded, the band went their separate ways, but Gibson wasn't swayed. He continued to write and perform songs, but never had any that stuck for very long. Finally, in 1955, Don's luck changed completely. He wrote his first top ten hit "Sweet Dreams," and got his name on the map. He signed with RCA in 1957, and wrote "Blue Blue Day," "Tell It Like It Is," and "Sweet Sweet Girl," all of which only enjoyed mediocre success among America's music audiences. Shortly after in that year, Don wrote the two songs he would be known forever for, possibly in one day. He wrote "Oh Lonesome Me" and "I Can't Stop Loving You," which would be released together on one double-sided single.
