Geography and Culture
Dominica is nicknamed the "Nature Island of the Caribbean" for its largely unspoilt rainforests and extensive system of national parks. The population of the island is primarily of African descent, and while English is the official language, a dialectical form of French is also spoken.
Brief History
Dominica was one of the last islands in the Caribbean to be colonized, as it was inhabited by bands of Carib Indians hostile to outsiders. The island became a British colony in 1805 and achieved independence in 1978. The island is the home to approximately 3,000 native Carib Indians, the last remaining pre-Columbian population in the eastern Caribbean. Dominica is a thermally active island, and the youngest such island in the Caribbean.

Dominica Carnival
Carnival footage on the island of Dominica -- dancing, singing, and playing in the streets. Modern dress, fanciful dress, and native dress. Jazz and native instruments. Some of the dancers cover themselves in mud. Beauty pageant contestants are part of the parade. The singing is partly in English and partly in French. There is even a local drill team in the parade. Toward the end, there are many locals dressed as pirates, in honor of the filming in Dominica of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean.
