Dolphins are intelligent marine life that is closely related to whales. There are thirty six species of dolphins one of which is the Orca or killer whale, it is the largest specie of dolphin and can get over thirty one feet long. Other species of dolphins include True dolphins, River dolphins, Hector's dolphins, porpoises, Tucuxi dolphins, Black dolphins and Commerson's dolphins.
Dolphins are in the Cetacean family this family consists of whales, dolphins and porpoises. However the cetacean family is then broken down into smaller families so kind of like a family within a family. Dolphins belong to the Odonticety family which is then broken down further splitting the species of dolphins into four smaller families. River dolphins like the Indus River Dolphins and Amazon River Dolphins belong to the Platanistidae Family, while the Stenidae family has species like the Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Striped Dolphins and Long-Snouted Spinner Dolphins among others. Dolphins such as Pygmy Killer Whales, Irrawaddy River Dolphins and Short-finned Pilot Whales are part of the Delphinidae family. The last group is the Phocoenidae family which has Dall's Porpoise, True's Porpoise and Finless Porpoise as part of its family.http://www.dolphins-world.com/Dolphin_Species.html
