Dog kennel training, or crate training, is a method of training a puppy or dogs by giving them a safe and secure place to retreat to while you are away. Kennel training is also an easy way to potty train your puppy.
Tips
- Choose a kennel/crate that's big enough to house your puppy comfortable, making sure there is adequate room for him to stand up and turn around.
- If your puppy or dog is reluctant to enter the kennel don't rush it, leave the door to the kennel open for him to explore on his own.
- The kennel should be your dog or puppy's "safe place". Never use the kennel as a form of punishment.
- Give you dog or puppy time in the kennel while you are home, this way he doesn't associate it with being left alone.
- Most kennels/crates offer water dishes that clip to the sides. If your dog or puppy in kenneled for an extended length of time, make sure you offer water.
