The Los Angeles Dodgers entered the second round of the 2008 playoffs by defeating the Chicago Cubs in the National League Division Series. The Dodgers swept the Cubs, winning the final game on October 4, 2008, with a score of 3-1.

In 2008, long-time Yankees manager Joe Torre took over skipper duties for the Dodgers. But, the beginning of the 2008 Dodgers season was marked by an array of injuries top players such as Rafael Furcal, Jeff Kent, Brad Penny, and Andruw Jones.

The team was able to overcome those injuries by relying on young players such as Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp and James Loney, as well as the veteran presence of Russell Martin and Nomar Garciaparra.

The real turning point for the team, was the acquisition of Manny Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline.

The team also had major contributions from their pitching staff including Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw, Hiroki Kuroda, Greg Maddux and Derek Lowe.

The bullpen was anchored by closer Jonathan Broxton.

On September 25, 2008, the Dodgers clinched the National League west title, when the Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. It was manager Joe Torre's first playoff appearance with the Dodgers.SI.com: Torre Dodgers back in postseason\
