In 1966 Donna studied at Parsons School of Design, leaving after two years to work with Anne Klein. She was let go in 1968, but rehired in 1970. When Anne Kline died in 1974, Karan completed the collection and remained with the company until 1989. During that time she received 2 Coty Awards and was eventually named the head of the design team.

In 1985, Karan started her own line, which was joined by a second line designed for younger customers in 1988. These mix and match pieces were the start of the DKNY label and the Seven Easy Pieces collection.
