In Catholicism, a novena is a devotion prayed over successive days to obtain special graces from God. A novena may consist of prayers said throughout the day and a recitation of the rosary.
The Divine Mercy Novena is unique in that it is intended to solicit graces for others. The Divine Mercy Novena is practiced over nine days, beginning on Good Friday, the Friday before Easter Sunday.
The prayers that make up the Divine Mercy Novena were believed to have been dictated by a vision of Christ to Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun, in 1931. Saint Faustina recorded the prayers in her diary.
